UK managers lacking leadership capabilities

Recent research reports from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and recruitment firm Robert Half show that UK managers are lacking the skills needed to lead and motivate their people.

The CIPD HR Outlook survey mirrors Robert Half's poll of 200 HR directors, showing there is a severe lack of leadership skills amongst management in the UK. One in five do not demonstrate strong planning skills, 15 per cent lack function skills for their job, and 14 per cent lack communication skills.

Whilst the key leadership behaviours cited by the research includes performance management and people management, 53 per cent of those surveyed said their leaders' performance management skills were lacking, with 44 per cent feeling that leaders demonstrated ineffective people management.

Dr Jill Miller, research adviser at the CIPD, comments: “In order to lead people effectively, leaders need to have a variety of skills – but while technical skills are critical in organisations, they do not always go hand-in-hand with people skills.

“Organisations need to respond to this mismatch by making targeted investment in their leadership’s people management capability.

“A strong talent pipeline, which promotes both strong people management and technical excellence, will support people to reach their full potential at work and is essential for a sustainable and high-performing business.”
