The recent G20 Digital Entrepreneurship Barometer, the basis of a new report, “Digital Disruption — Threat or Opportunity for Entrepreneurship?” released to mark the start of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance summit in China, ranks the UK as the top 20 country for ease of starting a digital business and navigating the regulatory environment. Amongst the G20 nations, the UK leads the way for cutting red tape for digital entrepreneurs, and for its digital knowledge base and information and communications technology market. This includes access to technology and expertise, as well as the quality of research institutions.
The UK’s lowest ranking amongst the G20 nations was for access to finance, such as venture capital and angel funding (ninth place), and for availability of digital skills and entrepreneurial education (seventh place).
The report warns that G20 leaders must do better to support the development of young entrepreneurs and it also identifies a number of key policy recommendations covering:
- Access to finance
- Entrepreneurial culture
- Digital business environment
- Digital skills and entrepreneurial education
- Digital knowledge base and ICT market
