UK ‘a good place to start a business’, despite Brexit

A survey by Barclays of the perceptions of 1,350 global business leaders of UK entrepreneurs and on doing business with UK scale-ups, has found that 78 per cent of overseas business leaders think the UK is a good place to start and grow a business.

79 per cent of those consulted described the UK’s start-up scene as an important global growth business hub for entrepreneurs, while 82 per cent would consider investing in a UK start-up, that's despite the vote to leave the European Union. Of those surveyed, business leaders in Brazil, US and China are the most optimistic about the UK start-up environment.

‘Made in Britain’ remains a brand which holds strong appeal, whilst greater differentiation and innovation in products and services, more interpersonal communication and improved digital skills were cited as the key factors which would help UK entrepreneurs boost trade.

Commenting on the report, Richard Heggie, head of high growth and entrepreneurs at Barclays, says: “This shows UK entrepreneurs are held in high regard by business leaders globally, particularly in Brazil, China and the US.  However it’s critical that, against the backdrop of Brexit, the UK does everything it can to maintain and crucially build on this. That includes capitalising on the trade relationships and investment opportunities that the research highlights in order to thrive.”

The findings come off the back of a YouGov/Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR) business confidence index, published earlier in the month, showing that business confidence in the UK has returned to pre-EU referendum levels, as key decision makers at companies express greater optimism over the outlook for the economy.
