Congratulations to our Beavis Morgan football team who proudly raised the trophy as winners of this year’s ICAEW football tournament, claiming their place as the champions of football within the UK accounting sector.
The tournament, considered the Champions League of the accounting world, has not always been rewarding for the Beavis Morgan team who previously have not made it past the group stage. This year, however, they arrived determined to reach the top – and that’s just what they did.
Having been drawn a tough group, coming up against Mazars, Lubbock Fine and the Chartered Institute of Tax, the team saw some nail-biting moments along the way. Their sheer drive and determination to win, however, saw them work seamlessly together as they fought their way into the Quarter Finals, where they defeated tournament organisers AJ Chambers in a battle of brawn, ending in a 4 – 2 win to Beavis Morgan.
Having progressed to the Semi’s, Beavis Morgan then faced fellow accountants HW Fisher. Despite injury starting to take its toll after four successive games, the team’s well thought out tactics, fine goalkeeping and a few courageous defence performances saw Beavis Morgan through to a smooth 3 – 0 finish and a place in the Grand Final alongside Accuracy.
With the knowledge that they had come into the Final as the underdogs, the Beavis Morgan team knew they had everything to fight for. It was a tight battle, which saw the scoreboard hold a draw almost to the end. However, the Beavis Morgan team did not lose heart and, thanks to a last minute goal, they were able to snatch victory with a 4 – 3 win, taking the event trophy.
Commenting on the win, Beavis Morgan’s Team Captain, Carl Tang, says: “To win the ICAEW trophy has been a long-standing aspiration of ours. Now that goal has been achieved and we are very happy – the players, our fans and our Beavis Morgan colleagues. We were all exhausted coming into the final but we managed to find a way through. In the end I think we thoroughly deserved to win the tournament.”
Beavis Morgan Senior Partner, Peter Drown, adds: “Our players kept a cool head throughout the tournament, despite coming up against some tough opposition. Their persistence and determination to be their best truly paid off.
“Well done for bringing home the Cup and securing Beavis Morgan’s third trophy of the 2019 season. We are exceptionally proud of you all.“
