HMRC to delay digital tax plans to focus on Brexit

As the UK prepares for Brexit, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced that it will be putting plans to digitise tax returns on hold indefinitely.

In a statement, the Revenue says it is delaying plans to introduce further digital services for individuals in order to “release project capability to EU Exit work,” adding that this means “halting progress on simple assessment and real time tax code changes.”

HMRC says the Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Individuals programme has made significant progress and foundations have been laid for future use.

“We remain committed to our digital ambitions: we will continue to encourage more customers to use their Personal Tax Accounts and will focus on improving the existing service. Additional services will be added only where they reduce phone and post contact or deliver significant savings.

“We will pause work to digitise services that impact fewer numbers of customers, such as those paying

Inheritance Tax, or applying for Tax Advantaged Venture Capital Schemes and PAYE settlement agreements.”

The decision by HMRC to defer the digital system means there is no change for people who would have otherwise had to move across to pre-populated tax returns.
