A recent report by the National Audit Office indicates that millions may be owed money by HMRC due to phone blunders caused by staff shortages. And today the Treasury is in the line of fire again for reportedly benefitting from “accidental overpayments” via the new digital tax filing system. Under this new regime companies, the self-employed and those employees earning a secondary income of over ￡10,000 a year must update their digital accounts quarterly. But the Government has been accused of using the online returns system to cash in on unintentional overpayments by taxpayers.
