The person sitting next to you on the beach sipping a cocktail may not be who they seem, after the Greek finance ministry announces plans to expand its surveillance of popular tourist spots with undercover inspectors told to “blend in with tourists.”
According to The Times, the crackdown, dubbed “Mission Summer Shorts”, has provoked some people, with inspectors facing increased hostility from locals, and sometimes even violence.
One team of undercover tax inspectors were reportedly attacked after trying to arrest the owner of a taverna who allegedly failed to give customers receipts.
While we wouldn’t expect physical violence in the UK, this does act a reminder of the need to keep proper and complete business records.
