Worrying decline in UK entrepreneurial activity

A recent article expresses concern over the lack of entrepreneurs in the UK.

Writing for The Times, journalist Oliver Kamm says there has been a concerning slump in the level of entrepreneurial activity in the past year.

He cites figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics which shows that the number of business births decreased last year for the first time since 2010, from 414,000 in 2016 to 382,000 in 2017, and the number of business deaths increased from 288,000 to 357,000.

“The very low cost of capital ought to encourage business investment and start-ups, but uncertainty over Brexit probably is helping to restrain business creation,” Mr Kamm warns.
