Coding errors for online returns may hamper MTD rollout

Glitches in HMRC’s software could mean that mean some people who file their tax return online could be overcharged by up to £1,000 and possibly fined £100.

According to The Times’ Carol Lewis, changes to tax rules have caused problems for the software coders at the Revenue who produce the programmes, leaving HMRC’s systems unable to process online returns correctly. Those who use tax software say that their systems will reject affected online forms, leaving taxpayers to complete paper returns.

These difficulties do not bode well for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital programme, which has already come up against significant criticism in recent months.
