UK business leaders and the City of London were among those accompanying the Chancellor Philip Hammond on a trade trip to China this past weekend, representing Britain ahead of the Brexit negotiations and trade deals.
The two-day forum “One Belt, One Road”, hosted by Beijing, formed part of President Xi Jinping’s initiative to forge new trade networks between Europe and Asia.
Speaking at the event, the Chancellor said Britain is a “natural partner” for China in the West, and that the UK will strive to build stronger ties with China as it prepares to leave the EU, including building better infrastructure links and enhancing economic ties.
“As we embark on a new chapter in our history, as we leave the European Union, we want to maintain a close and open trading partnership with our European neighbours but at the same time, it is our ambition to secure free trade agreements around the world with new partners and old allies alike.”
“Our ambition is for more trade, not less,” Mr Hammond added. “China clearly shares that ambition.”
