According to data released by China’s embassy in London, British exports to China surged 19.4 per cent to reach $22.31 billion, with China’s exports to Britain increasing 1.8 per cent.
Ministry of Commerce for China, Gao Feng, says the increases can be attributed to “new achievements in corporate cooperation in innovation, telecom, new energy and other fields” which he explains are being jointly pursued.
Ahead of British Prime Minister, Theresa May’s, official visit to China on Wednesday, Liu Xiaoming, China’s ambassador to the UK, says he sees Britain playing a central role as a “natural partner” in advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at forging new trade networks between Europe and Asia.
“We can say at this moment China and Britain have formed a strong political consensus and a solid foundation for cooperation in strengthening the Belt and Road Initiative,” Mr Liu says.
Christopher Bovis, a professor of international business law at University of Hull says: “British exports to China are set to grow further, thanks to Chinese consumers’ growing spending power and strong appetite for ‘made in Britain” brands.”
