With just a few days to go until the 31 January self-assessment deadline, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has published a list of the strangest and most imaginative excuses and expense claims received over the past 10 years
From a mother-in-law putting a curse over someone, to hamsters eating the mail, and not being able to find a post box on a hike in the mountains, HMRC has heard them all. Someone even went as far as to claim £4.50 for sausage and chips meal expenses for 250 days!
But, while some of the excuses are very funny, the filing of a tax return on time is in fact a more serious matter and can result in substantial penalties.
The deadline of 31 January 2020 for sending 2018-19 self-assessment tax returns to HMRC and paying any tax owed is fast approaching, so contact us for assistance and to ensure you remain compliant.
